Now that summer is on it’s way I have been more and more excited about BBQ lunches and gatherings with friends. My boyfriend, Jay and I went to a BBQ last week which included white bread dinner rolls and processed beef patties with very little fresh ingredients. I was inspired to recreate this same situation in a way that catered to those trying to make healthier choices along with those who follow gluten-free, Paleo/grain free or low carb diets. I really wanted to make sure each ingredient was high quality and healthy so that the overall outcome would be super delicious.
After having no success in find a healthy bread alternative in my local supermarket I took one of my most successful bun recipes that I use for dinner rolls occasionally and used them to create the burger buns for this. We created a DIY station, build your burger style laying out the steak, cos lettuce, freshly sliced tomato and red onion and my much loved home-made herb aioli as a fresh sauce.
HOW TO COOK A STEAK
Instead of using meat patties we tried something new - Silver Fern Farms Flat-Iron Steak. There's something that just makes a burger so much nicer with a good quality piece of steak. Perhaps because it seems more like a steak sandwich which I love! They’ve just released this new product to their range, at an affordable price point of $12.95. I love that their packs have two single serve sizes (they’re approximately 110 grams each) making it perfect for Jay and I as a couple or great if we’re catching up with a couple of friends. Each steak is vacuum sealed for optimum freshness. Before cooking you will need to remove the packaging to allow it to come to room temperature. This will take around 10-20 minutes.
To cook the steak, you will need to heat a BBQ or cast iron pan over a high heat. Oil the meat (not the pan) and season with salt. Place this onto your pan for 3 minutes before flipping and cooking for a further 3 minutes. Transfer to a chopping board or plate, cover and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
